Introducing the

Lower Windrush Valley Project

The Lower Windrush Valley Project covers 28 km2 of West Oxfordshire incorporating the floodplain of the River Windrush from Witney to its confluence with the River Thames at Newbridge. Please click here to see full colour notice.

Over the last 50 years the landscape character of the valley has been extensively modified by mineral extraction with large areas of the riverside pasture transformed into a mosaic of open water.

Whilst we continue to demand sand and gravel for housing, roads and other construction work, the Lower Windrush Valley will go on being worked for many years to come, bringing even greater changes to the landscape and wildlife.

Since 1990 there has been a concerted effort by both the County and District Councils to develop a co-ordinated after-use strategy for the Lower Windrush, ensuring that this evolving landscape meets the needs of all who live and work in the valley.

The Lower Windrush Valley Project works closely with mineral operators, landowners and the community to co-ordinate, implement and help manage projects that improve the landscape, biodiversity and public access of the area.
