Secretary: Mr. B. H. Roberts, 47 High Street, Standlake Tel: 01865 300799

During the AGM at our April 2010 meeting our Chairman Mrs Maureen Nicholas resigned after a very long time as Secretary and Chairman. She will be very much missed ! and the committee would like to convey our thanks to her. We may have a replacement as chairman but we are short of two committee members. This is not onerous and only needs attendance at four committee meetings and four talks held the second Tuesday of September,December, February and April.

Next Meeting: 7th December - Mr Jim Godfrey - Christ Church; a Peculiar Place

Village Information

In the summer of 1993 a pilot meeting was held with a view to restarting the History Society which had disbanded in the mid 1970s. A small provisional committee was set up and the inaugural meeting of the new Society was held on 3rd October when Dr. Simon Townley outlined his researches on the village entry to the Victoria County History of England, which was shortly to be published. The Society has flourished and has welcomed many excellent speakers; in addition visits have been made to local historical properties.

It mounted an exhibition in 1995 to commemorate Victory in Europe and a successful photographic exhibition to mark the new millennium. The society has collected a large archive of old photographs and thanks to a grant from the West Oxfordshire District Council aerial photographs of the village have recently been purchased. Members have published several books and pamphlets on Standlake's history.

Meetings take place on the first Tuesday of October, December, February & April at 8pm in Standlake Village Hall. In June and July visits are made to local places of historical interest.
